Biographical Info When I became a person with a mobility disability, every aspect of my world changed. To continue my art, I transitioned from a rather physical textile practice to painting while seated. For safety, I needed to look closely at the ground I roll or walk on to be aware of slippery surfaces, cracks, bumps, curbs, and stairs. To my surprise, I found interesting patterns and textures, and infinite inspiration by looking at my immediate paved world. My “groundscapes” interpret and give homage to our precious ground. As a lifelong feminist I am interested in women’s stories, particularly the daily lives of “ordinary” women who have pushed gender equality forward. In the “Strong Women” series, I have focused on stories from 1930s beauticians to the “essential workers” of the COVID pandemic. We can pause, take a moment, and think about strong women. Let’s also further gender equality. Gender equality is when people of all genders have equal rights, responsibilities, and opportunities. Gender equality prevents violence against women and girls. It’s essential for economic prosperity. Societies that value women and men as equal are safer and healthier. Equality fosters not only strong women, but strong people.
