Barbara Wilson
Biographical Info Barbara Wilson is a Wisconsin-based artist that has recently earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Art with a focus in Painting and Drawing at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Through large-scale portraiture, Wilson’s paintings explore themes of self-expression and how claiming and taking up space reinforces self-identity. Wilson is a recipient of the UWM Laurence Rathsack Art Scholarship and has recently exhibited her work in Trout Museum of Art’s TMA Contemporary exhibition and UWM’s Union Art Gallery’s 51st Annual Juried Show. In the fall of 2023, Wilson received a Support for Undergraduate Research Fellows (SURF) award that launched a collaborative research project on Peck School of the Arts’ (PSOA) 1972 mural by pop art pioneer Red Grooms. In addition to researching and exhibiting work, Wilson gained experience in studio management while working with Milwaukee-based photographer and installation artist Sonja Thomsen from January 2023 to February 2024. After earning her degree in the Spring of 2024, Wilson has maintained momentum within Wisconsin fine arts by exhibiting work in Peck School of the Arts’ Brushwork exhibition as well as becoming a member at Jambalaya Arts in Oshkosh, WI after creating a live portrait painting at the gallery’s Art in the Alley Arts and Music Festival. In the coming months, Wilson will continue to explore her passion for painting through self-portraiture and a series of portraits of friends and family to consistently develop and maintain her portfolio for future graduate studies.
