Nadia Alkhun
Artist Biography
Nadia Alkhun is a Wisconsin-based interdisciplinary artist, gallerist, and former biotechnologist whose practice bridges science, art, culture, and community. Originally from Jordan, Alkhun’s artistic practice is deeply informed by her scientific background and her fascination with the complexity, diversity, and interconnectedness of life.
Alkhun earned a Bachelor of Science in Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering from Jordan University of Science and Technology in 2007. After working in the scientific field, she returned to her longstanding passion for art and earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting and Drawing, summa cum laude, with a Certificate in Community Arts, from the Peck School of the Arts at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee in 2022.
Her abstract paintings are inspired by biology, microscopic structures, cellular systems, and the relationships that allow living systems to exist and evolve. Drawing from her scientific background, Alkhun creates imagined biospheres through dots, lines, organic forms, textures, and layers of color. Rather than depicting specific organisms or places, these visual worlds function as metaphors for interconnected systems in which individual elements become organisms, pathways, communities, and evolving ecosystems.
A central concern in Alkhun’s work is the relationship between individuality and belonging. She is interested in how distinct elements can retain their unique identities while contributing to a larger, interconnected whole. Observing that no organism exists entirely in isolation, she draws parallels between the interdependence found in nature and the complexity of human society. Her work reflects a belief that cultural, religious, geographical, and personal differences do not have to divide us; instead, they can enrich the larger system of which we are all a part.
As a Jordanian-born Muslim woman who has experienced more than one cultural world, Alkhun’s perspective is informed by questions of identity, belonging, and cultural understanding. Rather than limiting her work to a particular identity or personal narrative, she uses her perspective as a starting point for a broader exploration of shared human experience. Through abstraction, she creates spaces where viewers from different backgrounds can enter the work through their own experiences and find connection without needing to share her history, religion, or culture.
Alkhun is also the founder and owner of NADIANA Art Gallery in Greenfield, Wisconsin. Through the gallery, she supports emerging and established artists and creates opportunities for people from diverse backgrounds to encounter art, exchange perspectives, and build community. Her studio practice and her work as a gallerist are connected by her belief in art as a space where differences can remain visible while belonging to something larger.
Alkhun has exhibited in numerous juried and invitational exhibitions and has received recognition for her work. Her paintings have also been featured in medical publications and news outlets, reflecting the distinctive intersection of her artistic and scientific backgrounds.
Through both her artwork and community work, Alkhun seeks to create a vision of coexistence-one in which individuality is preserved rather than erased, and distinct histories, identities, and perspectives can contribute to a more interconnected whole.
