Biographical Info

Joan is a sculptor working in fibers. Her dimensional bas-relief and 3D sculptures are sewn from layered hand-dyed reclaimed wool fabric, which is then felted. Additional meaning and texture are added through hand stitching with hand dyed-wool yarn, along with various other threads and objects. Through twenty years of exploration and experimentation, Joan developed techniques for using the natural tendencies of her materials to express her intentions.
Joan’s art aims to illuminate connections within the natural world, and between it and the built world, with the hope that people will connect with her art through their own experiences, gaining insights that inform their future experiences in the natural world.
Joan supports the art community as a volunteer docent at the Museum of Wisconsin Art, in the collections department at the Wisconsin Museum of Quilts and Fiber Arts and with her service to Wisconsin Craft.
